Ocarina's technology includes a wide variety of data-reduction software technologies and proven workflows for integrating that technology into a variety of storage systems, including both embedded solutions that run directly on the storage or server host, as well as standalone offerings that work with heterogeneous storage systems. Data reduction technologies include advanced deduplication algorithms as well as both generic and custom compression solutions that have proven effective against over 2,000 different file types.

Ocarina Networks built its technology on the concept of being content-aware. Content-awareness means that by understanding the underlying structure of files and data types, data reduction ratios are improved, while resource consumption on the host is reduced. Ocarina stands by our commitment that in any apple-to-apples testing, Ocarina will shrink data better!

In July 2010 - after a nearly year-long  integration partnership - Dell acquired Ocarina Networks for undisclosed terms. Ocarina development teams are now tightly integrated with Dell's storage organization, working towards the release of a variety of Ocarina-enabled storage products that will be announced in the future.
